Four Calls to Make After a Car Collision

Sometimes, one mistake can reduce the compensation a victim receives in a bodily injury case. Unfortunately, many Texans do not know what to do immediately after a motor vehicle accident. Since 2017, my staff and I have settled hundreds of crash-related claims against many auto insurance companies. Based on my experience, I have created a list of four phone calls you should make if you or someone you know is involved in a car wreck:

The Police

A car accident can be traumatic, so reporting a crash to the proper law enforcement agency may be one of the last things on your mind. However, it is in your best interest to call 911, cooperate with the responding law enforcement officers, and request a crash report immediately after a car accident—no matter how minor it may seem. Since most officers have the training and experience necessary to analyze and determine who they believe to be at fault, the crash report is crucial to prove the at-fault driver’s negligence caused the collision

Your Loved Ones

In some of Texas’s bigger cities, it may take more than a few minutes for the police to arrive at the scene of a collision. While you wait for the police to arrive, you should call or text your loved ones to let them know where you are and that you have been injured in a car wreck. Talking to your friends and family may help you stay calm while you wait, and you may need help getting home or to the hospital if you cannot drive.

Your Medical Provider

Some crash-related conditions, like back and neck pain, may not immediately present after a collision. Therefore, you should not turn down a police officer’s request for an ambulance if you sustain any bodily injuries. If you do not go to a hospital but experience pain after the collision, you should seek medical attention from your primary medical provider as soon as possible.

An Experienced Injury Lawyer

Injury lawyers do more than negotiate and settle cases; an experienced injury lawyer should help develop a claim by gathering and organizing necessary evidence immediately after a car accident. Generally, the longer it takes for a crash victim to hire an attorney, the more likely it is that the insurance company will undervalue the claim. If someone’s negligence injures you or a loved one, you have enough things to worry about. Do not let negotiating with an insurance company be one of them. We deal with the insurance company so you can focus on getting your life back to normal. You have one chance to do this; make the right choice by choosing the right attorney.
